The 7th meeting of the Reimagine RTD Technical Working Group met occurred on July 15. Reimagine is looking at development of a near term System Optimization Plan (SOP) and a longer-term Mobility Plan for the Future for RTD. During the meeting there was a recap of the SOP scenarios with the following key takeaways:
Service Quality results in the:
- Most boardings
- Lowest cost per boarding
- Best travel time ratio
Social Equity results in the:
- Most social equity population service by 15‐minute or better service
- Highest bus boardings per service hour
Service Productivity results:
- Similar to social equity in most categories
Geographic Coverage results in the:
- Most population and employment served
- Fewest boardings
- Lowest equity population served by 15‐minute or better service
- Highest cost per boarding
Results of a service philosophy exercise done with the Technical Working Group, Advisory Committee, and RTD Board of Directors were shared. Some of the key takeaways were:
Near term
- Strong support for service to social equity populations •Limited support for achieving a low cost (to RTD) per boarding metric •TWG and AC strongly supported high frequency service to areas with transit‐supportive land uses over spreading service throughout the District •All groups favored the idea of a regional transit backbone provided by RTD and exploring local
community partnerships to operate/pay for local service
Midterm
- TWG and AC strongly supported service to equity populations
- TWGand AC strongly supported high‐frequency service to areas with transit supportive land uses over a coverage‐based system
- All groups favored a regional transit backbone provided by RTD and exploring local community partnerships to operate/pay for local service
There was discussion and feedback regarding SOP DRAFT Guiding Principles and Network Development and a presentation of some initial proposed plans for rail and bus service changes. Information was also presented about partnerships and cost sharing.

This week a group of transit advocates had a great guided tour of the 5280 Trail. About 20 folks met with their bicycles at noon in Skyline Plaza in front of the Downtown Denver Partners office. Andrew Iltis and Adam Perkins led the group, using cargo bikes to carry all of their props – they brought sunscreen and water and story boards for each stop along the trail. The group looped around downtown Denver stopping at various part of the trail to learn about the segment just traversed and the upcoming portion. Along the way we learned about the history of the trail, the history of the divergent parts of downtown, and the vision for the future – immediate and further out. A map of the trail is available at https://www.downtowndenver.com/initiatives-and-planning/the-5280/explore-5280/.
The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) granted two conditional certifications to MachineGenius and Clarity to provide Internet Protocol Captioned Telephone Service (IP CTS) using only automatic speech recognition (ASR) technology.
ASR technology means the captioning will be created without the aid of communications assistants, live captioning operators. Instead, the caller’s voice will generate the captions with the use of technology.
MachineGenius’ app is called Olelo, which can be installed on a mobile device, including smartphones and tablets that are Wi-Fi or mobile-data enabled. It will include such features as call history, captioned voicemail, and speakerphone.
Clarity’s app is called CaptionMate, which can be installed on iOS and Android phones and tablets or accessed via a website. CaptionMate will also allow users to pause the transcription of a call, display captions on multiple devices, select a language corresponding to that of the other party, view captions of both parties’ voices, share captions of the other party’s voice with that party, and rate captioning quality.

Ambitious plans are in place to refurbish Denver’s iconic 16th Street Mall. But a petition signed by nearly 3,000 people to date calls for Denver City Council to squelch the project and redirect the millions of dollars set aside for it to Denver Public Schools and the City of Denver — entities that activists behind the campaign feel could use the funds for purposes better than an expensive spruce-up amid the COVID-19 pandemic.
